Yes I know I was being a git (what me?) and I agree, as I said in a
previous post some of the Leylandii I saw in Essex when working there
where well giants. And I don't think they had stopped growing. What is
the earliest known Leylandii planted if it is known.

(Nick says: No Ian the majority of modern built urban locations are
unsuitable for TPO trees.. What are you thinking about?)

Thinking about a holiday atm, thanks for asking. ...but regarding modern
built urban locations then perhaps most are unsuitable for fast growing
trees as TPOs, especially where foundation depths are incorrectly
calculated according to the tree size then when the footings are first
excavated. 

What I am saying is that, as with most gardens with Leylandii (in hedge
form), they look great when young and kept regularly trimmed. But as
soon as you miss a few trimmings they become unmanageable and then the
only solution is to fell. With a single tree, they look lovely with
great form in a pot at the nursery, but should carry a 'warning' sign as
'Extreme Height Potential, Plant with Caution'.
