Subject: Wingnut Tree
Dear Mr Burke,
in response to your email.
We have had our Wingnut taken down because its sister tree planted in
the 19thC had split down the centre without significant bad weather (see
pic). This prompted us to have a 'Picas Tomograph' investigation on the
existing tree in Abbotsbury gardens. As you can see from the results the
core had no structure (Brown is the solid wood) and was the same
condition as the fallen tree which presented a major Health and Safety
risk for the public. Pollarding or reduction would only be a short term
solution. We have more experience than anyone in the country regarding
ancient trees especially Pterocarya fraxinifolia as ours are some of the
first introductions into the country in 1845.
Sincerely
Mr S J Griffith
Gardens Curator
