One guy I worked for didn't give a monkeys about paying to the point of
having to have the gates locked all the time in case of bailiffs
strangely when it came to his employees he was a complete a**e accusing
all and sundry of stealing and would search people at random if they
refused they got sacked. I think he would have strip searched people if
he'd thought he could get away with it. I left fairly sharpish a real as
they say in the westerns low down son of a gun.

Subject: Late payers
I mentioned an Act that we cite in our "chaser" letters, et voila -
"... and would advise you that we will be claiming for interest on the
outstanding debt under section 69 of the County Courts Act 1984 from the
date of issue of our invoice ..."
SC Late payers are rather less a problem than un-payers. "Well go
ahead, sue me." If you consider the cost of attorneys and put any value
on your time you would wind up loosing money even if you win a judgment.
And court judgments - especially "small claims" - don't come with
enforcement by the courts. We don't have debtors prisions anymore.
SC For those types the threat of a few percent interest is laughable
because they're not going to pay the principal.
SC I had a very respectable attorney tell me once that he could never
craft a contract good enough to protect you from bad people and
sometimes in business you can't predict who they will be.
SC I know two senior consultants who listen to discussions like this
and ask "what's an invoice?" And smile. They work only on upfront
retainer that is replenished before there is any unreimbursed time. I
haven't worked up the confidence, nerve, backlog of work or whatever it
would take to adopt that practice.
SC I know another consultant who when still doing contracting "let"
the late-payer barter down the outstanding invoice by being a disposal
site. The 5:30 AM visit was to place a 2,000 pound log in the driveway
as the first of 20 installments...
