Electricity companies work to a number of different measurement based on
voltage.
1) Live zone
2)Vicinity zone
The live zone is the effective distance the electricity can arc around the
line or apparatus. This distance is based on voltage and is as follows:-
· Not exceeding 33kV = 0.8m
· Not exceeding 66kV = 1m
· Not exceeding 132kV = 1.4m
· Not exceeding 275kV = 2.4m
· Not exceeding 400kV = 3.1
The Vicinity zone is the minimum statutory clearance the electricity company
must get for safety purposes and is as follows:
· Not exceeding 1kV = 1m
· Not exceeding 11kV = 2m
· Not exceeding 33kV = 2.5m
· Not exceeding 66kV = 3m
· Not exceeding 132kV = 3.5m
· Not exceeding 275kV = 4m
· Not exceeding 400kV = 5m
However these are the minimum clearances required for safety. The operators
also have a duty under the electricity continuity of supply regulations to
ensure supply is maintained. To comply with this and to avoid frequent recuts
(and associated cost) they usually try and gain consent for the minimum
clearance plus an arbitary amount to account for regrowth characteristics and
speed based on species.

Hi Thomas,
As I recall they were amended (increased distances + several years re-growth)
a few years back as we experienced trees that had never been in the firing
line before requiring cutting within the wayleave.
From memory it was to do with making less frequent return visits as much to
do with H&S (don't have a reference though I'm afraid).
Try the National Grid - they are working under the large HT towers that run
through our Borough at the moment.

Morning all,
I've been looking up the safe/required clearance from overhead electricity
lines and I can't find anything that actually states what those distances
are. I thought it was 1m from low voltage and 3m on high voltage lines but
this is just from what I've been told in the past and I've never actually
seen it written down anywhere. Does anyone know where these specifications
are written, either in legislation or guidance from the National Grid?
Thanks in advance,
Thomas Gregory
