Rupert,
The fruiting body I most commonly see on Cupressus macrocarpa in the San
Francisco Bay Area is Laetiporus gilbertsonii, which causes a cubical brown
rot. The California Tree Failure Report Program collects information about
tree failures (actually, trained evaluators collect the information and
submit the data). Jim summarized the data available in 2007 for 426 failures
(below).
Averages
age 65 years. almost all <100. most 76 to 100.
dbh 40 inches
ht. 69 feet
spread 42 feet
Location & defects
Trunk failures 73 trees (17%) Associated conditions:
Multiple trunks. Dense crown. Cracks/splits.
Branch failures 203 trees (48%) Associated conditions: Heavy
lateral branch.
Root failures 150 trees (35%) Associated conditions: Kinked
girdling roots. Dense crown. Multiple trunks. One-sided. Failed portion
dead.
Location & decay (where decay recorded in failure evaluation n=419; doesn't
necessarily mean failure occurred because of decay)
Trunk 25 trees none / 45 with (64% of trunk failures)
Branch 149 trees none / 51 with (25% of branch failures)
Root 90 trees none / 59 with (40% of root failures)
Location & precipitation (where precipitation recorded in failure evaluation
n=418)
Trunk 17 none / 54 with
Branch 36 none / 162 with
Root 20 none / 129 with
For all failures where wind speed recorded (n=187)
< 5 mph 16%
5-25 mph 34%
over 25 mph 50%
Most failures occurred during our storm season (Oct. - March), during wind
and rain.
This program is now international and web-based
(http://svinetfc2.fs.fed.us/natfdb/). If you want to particpate (add to
database or retrieve data), you must complete the training. Mike Ellison and
Glynn Percival are ITFD trainers. It would be wonderful to have UK arborists
participate more and broaden the species represented. The database is
currently housed with the US Forest Service. As you might expect, it is
under-funded. The ISA is conducting a needs assessment.

Nelda
