How many Orchids would you need and could their introduction potentially
change the woodland ecology..., comes to mind.

I am still waiting for a reply on this subject, but will of course bring it
into this thread as and when.
Reading the ecology of Mycorrhizae last night (F. Allen) would appear my
suspicions/gut is on the right lines regarding "ecological crunches" In fact
it appears that a lack of P results in a break down of lectins and allows
entry of fungi.
Whats more, worrying me is that man has appeared to select pioneer weeds with
non mycotrophic capacities (brasiccas, wheat) because they succeed with
additions of merely water and N, so diminishing the diversity associated with
prime systems.
No wonder the ecosystems are failing!
but how can we turn that into a means of feeding the world on mycotrophic
systems?

Hi Tony,
I discussed this with two academic mycologists some years ago. There are a
number of orchids that don't have chlorophyll and rely on their fungal
partners to supply their carbohydrate requirements as well as mineral
nutrients and, to a certain extent their water requirements. We discussed
whether the orchid produced secondary metabolites that would be beneficial
for the fungus. Apparently there is little evidence to support or discount
this hypothesis. If you find out anything I'd be interested to hear.
