I note that the schedule suggestions (at 4.4.2.5 g) life stage) includes "semi-mature" as well as "early mature" but loses "veteran." Dunno what the difference between semi and early is. I think I'll keep the old version. (And why does one get a hyphen (as does over-mature) when the other doesn't?)
I agree - while I can see the logic in calling trees 'semi-mature'
because of nursery practice, I suspect a lot of non-arb readers of these
reports wouldn't necessarily recognise 'semi-mature' as being an earlier
stage than 'early-mature'.
And I still dislike the use of 'over-mature', which is just too
judgemental. You may as well say 'Clapped Out'.
Personally I'll be sticking with Young, Early-Mature, Mature,
Late-Mature and Old. (With Ancient thrown in when necessary for veteran
(and clapped out) trees.
