'So the point is that might be visualized as the dripline of the joint 
canopy.  Dripline (for open grown trees) is often used as an alternative for 
a trunk based RPA... in the literature and various North American schemes.  
It might be interesting to compare that to the multi-stem and overlapped 
single stem RPAs.'

Thanks Scott I like that as a better approach and one that could be visually 
demonstrated rather than speculated.
