Subject: Arboricultural Journal

Some people talk in riddles (not Einstein!) So let's clarify the situation
for those who are clearly confused:

Try finding the solution to this riddle.  General relativity + quantum
mechanics = ? Mathmaticians get up to it as well, I saw on Horizon that
Fermats last therorum was solved after a few hundred years or so;
incidentally employing techniques developed and published globally.

I understand the situation and I do see this as progress, so there is no
point questioning it.  If you want a leading journal and nearly all
others are operating in this way you best jump on board or get left behind.

However I do have reservations, how many non specialst institutions are going
to include subscription to the Arb Journal (AJ)? I have seen the same papers
published in AJ and other journals (elsevier I think). If one was pay to view
and the other available foc under the uni bulk subscription......

I was a member of the British Ecological Society, had to allow my
subscription to lapse for financial reasons. Full (ordinary) membership is
£48, student £24 etc. BES produce 5 journals of fairly good stature, £30 each
for hard copy annual subscription, ejournals £15 (the lot I think); opt in
for all grades. I have found these available on uni bulk subsription services
such as Athens. There are also discounts on offer for other publishers.

In my view a giant leap forward in member benefits would be access to a
service like athens, opt in if necessary,  then members would have access not
only to the AJ but the panoply of peer reviewed publications relevant to our
industry. I guess that the cost may be prohibitive.

Incidentally, while I'm on electronic communication, the AA could use email
to contact members, it takes less resources and when people move house they
tend to take their email account with them. Just a thought.
