If you remove ivy it grows back pretty quickly in my experience. It is 
therefore a relatively short term removal of a relatively abundant habitat -  
in many areas. Ok it may be good stuff, but not so precious you'd leave it 
when you ought to be looking more closely at a tree. As for the bats, if you 
think they're threatened it's because they're all hiding in my loft. I need a 
bloomin' shovel to find the Christmas decorations every year.
