Regarding Laetiporus it is far from fussy, but its fave hosts are Oak,
Prunus, hawthorn sweetchestnut and of course Yew in which it is one of the
few big decay fungi, but poplar, ash dont know if it has any wont go there
hosts, theres even a species in the states of Laetiporus that deals with
conifers Laetiporus conifericola"

It is also one of the few brown rots of beech, though this is a rare host and
thus far only found beeches with chicken in very old sites.

I would say definitely dont rule a fungi out simply because a book says only
on this or that host! many fungi are fairly generalist, but there are also
many others that do have a taste that is refined to one host type.

Daedalea quercina I have on beech, Oak and sweet chestnut

Perenniporia fraxinea on Oak petrea/robur beech and ash even robinia
psuedoaccacia

But if you like being surprised by fungi, how about meripilus at height?

They keep you on your toes for life these fungi.

I guess the moral of the tale is don't dismiss a host even if its not in
the book

Hi Rupert

I started off with Oxyporous but the descriptions and size did not fit,
after
Chris suggestion about Chicken I am favouring that now, just unusual on
Poplar.
The FB was about 150mm across and 2m from the ground on a 400mm diameter
stem.

thanks to all who replied

It has the look of Oxyporus, but Phillips says the brackets are only
3-6cm
across; what scale is the photo/how big was the fruit-body?

Hi

This FB is on a White Poplar about 2m up, any thoughts would be
appreciated,
doesn't appear to fit exactly any of the usual suspects Perenniporia or
Phellinus,

Thanks

Andy
