Yes you definatly need the maps there is an app for android phones
available dont know if its on any others yet. the arc gis app and desktop
have these too but i dont think the level of detail is enough

Unfortunately, the BGS website is NOT a replacement for the maps as
without knowing the profile of
the various layers (i.e. what is on top and what is beneath, and also
their thickness) you can only
report the colour of what is beneath the particular location. That is only
half the story. A 1 metre
overlay of London Clay will appear different to 50 metres of London Clay
that is hidden by a 1 m
overlay of sand or gravel - certainly from a subsidence risk point of
view. It may be difficult to
pick this up from the website but with the combination of map and cross
section a better assessment
can be made.
