Trees in Towns 2 and Jeremy Barrell et al have been warning about the gradual
erosion of urban tree cover and the above quote gives that a tangible
perspective.

Also rather flippantly; warning about loss of tree cover doesn't actually
prove a loss of tree cover is occurring. The TIT2 didn't actually record a
decline but an increase, although it also cautioned comparisons between the
2005 and 1992 datasets as they worked to different standards. There are urban
areas around here (Sheffield) where you could remove alternate street trees
and make absolutely no difference to tree cover. Equally there are areas
where you could plant hundreds of trees and make equally little difference,
although any Arb would reason that these neighbourhoods would still be
improved for their planting.
As for properties being increased in value by being close to a park; my local
park has some deeply unpleasant areas, due almost entirely to the fact that
the woodlands (proper SNAW at that) should've been thinned 40 years ago.
(It's also possible that the property values are increased entirely by
dog-owners who think they don't have to pick up their 5hit-machine's output
in a park....)
Bill.
