Damage to beech

Hello Gentlemen

Attached a photograph from a friend of damage to a beech tree, there
are about 3 stems in total all next to each other, all with the same
sort of damage. Could it be fire damage? The mature beech neighbour
shows no signs of damage at all. All replies gratefully recieved.
