Hi Andy,
It appears to be restricted to a branch or discrete part of the tree's
canopy. Is there something peculiar about that part of the tree, the branch
base or the roots and sapwood supplying it with water and nutrients?

Best of luck

Luke

Can anyone help with this please? There are some aphids but don't appear to
be enough to have done this much damage, there is no weeping bark or dead
bark and no obvious mechanical damage. There is a small amount of the same
die-back on the other side of the tree. Thanks Andy
