RE: BS re-survey timeframe?

I have more than once thought it would be useful if in their local validation
requirements LPA’s could make it clear that tree surveys should be “current”,
or be no more than two or three years old.

In practice I usually ring the tree officer and check before submitting an
out of date survey: I have had one, two and three year old surveys accepted,
but never more than that if I recall correctly.

The truth of the matter is that if a site is heavily populated by category A
and B trees that are intolerant of disturbance, and abutting or encroaching
into RPAs is highly likely, even a one year old survey might be
inappropriate. Conversely, with a site full of category ‘C’ trees and plenty
of space, a four year old survey might be fine.

However, I would prefer it if LPAs would put a time limit in their validation
requirements, as it would make it clear to consultants and developers from
the outset what will be acceptable and what won’t. Two years gets my vote,
but LPAs could always ask for a “current” survey, with a footnote explaining
that under normal circumstances this means 2 years, but on sites where the
risk of damage to trees is particularly high, the LPA might require an up to
date survey........

I‘m not sure I agree that this is something that should have appeared in the
revised BS: surely this is something for LPAs to decide on?

Gary,

We tend to update reports if it's one of ours. If we are taking on a job
with a survey by another consultant, we will draft a covering letter to
accompany the application.

Mark,

After you have made them complete a re-inspection of a site, do they

rewrite the whole report or attach a covering letter stating any changes / no

Alex,

We tend to recommend at least a re-visit after 12 months, just to

check tree condition and overall site conditions, if nothing else.

Doesn't cost the client too much and ensures that any documents are a true
representation of what's there at the time of application.

Hi Alex,

Personally Alex, I don't think you can put a standard time frame on

such matters and trying to fit everything into neat little boxes is

not always the answer. I think you need to think about what might

have

changed since the last survey ... Damage from adverse weather,

younger

trees maturing and even trees being removed and so on. I think a

year

old survey might be valid and you might just get away with two but

maybe three years up the line you have question it unless it is the

exact same development annnnnd, there's the rub, it depends on the

changes to the development doesn't it. Let's face it Alex, if you

get

a three year old survey in support of a proposal and find it

appropriate and valid then what's the problem????

Subject: BS re-survey timeframe?

Hello all,

I would be grateful for views from both public and private practice

as

to what is considered a reasonable timeframe for re-measurement of

trees to enable a tree survey for development, that provides

statistical constraint for designers and layouts, to be considered

current and enable impact of development on trees to be fairly

assessed (assuming a diverse tree population of both leaf and

needle).

The BS does not appear to make any reference to this quite important

issue.

Thanks,

Alex
