I worked with an old forester who was once part of a large gang of men (at a
time when labour was cheap) who undertook forestry operations on Borde Hill
Estate in Sussex. His heyday was axes and cross-cut saws and the man had arms
as thick to prove it. His generation hated 'waste' and when felling trees for
timber you were judged on the straightness and flatness of the cut stump, the
accuracy of felling (and woe betide you if you scuffed a tree to be retained)
and the closeness to the ground of the finished stump. It was a serious
matter if you left a stump too high and 'wasted' good timber!
