That's the conundrum Dom. Whereas Coprinus are saprphytic, secondary
colonisers, on dead wood and roots, you can never be sure how much decay has
occurred prior to their colonisation. As you say, quite often found around
Sorbus and cherry but probably because those trees are so often growing in
verge areas and surrounded by hard surfaces.

I have seen these associated with the failure (extensive structural root
decay) and decay (structural roots and stem) of living trees recently; Sorbus
and Betula respectively. I think another UKTCer saw something similar around
a poplar recently.
