There's a paper in the Arb Journal somewhere about the root architecture of 
street-planted Cherries. One of the things they discovered is that where 
pavements had been reinstated after roots had been wounded, (a root that had 
been planed rather than completely removed) the wound/callus wood grew more 
rapidly and distorted the pavement more quickly in the future. 

Should've been obvious if anybody had bothered to think about it. I consider 
it all to be bad practice but then again what are the options?
