depends on what sort of soil book you want; Julian's recommendation is good;
and if you want to know a bit about soil mechanics - which is what the
developers et al are interested in - I'd suggest Soil Mechanics by RE Craig;
m copy is from the '90's, pub Chapman & Hall, ISBN 0-412-39590-8
