I particularly liked episode two when the tree is actually felled. It is described in accurate detail but with a poetic tinge. It captured that mix of emotions I have felt when felling a mature tree - a combination of pleasure if it goes right, anticipation of the wood which will become available and regret at the taking of a life. 

You can buy the book but Anton Lesser reads it beautifully.

The extract played yesterday involved Robin Wood; a well-known wood-turner round here, and a regular visitor to our yard in search of timber for his exploits. He's also one of the few people who correctly identified Sorbus torminalis on the AA stand at the National Forest wood fair a couple of years ago. A nice chap. 


Didn't Rob Penn (the author) have a bit of a TV series a few years ago?
