Isn't there some new thinking that once the trees have established that a 
weed layer can help maintain moisture?

Stipulating a time can be awkward because it will depend upon the site and 
the beating up proportion - not to mention stock growth rate.  1+1s on 
ploughed peat in Scotland don't need weeding, whereas in the south-east it 
can drag on for 7 years!

Is 5 years still usual for this, as per the FC grant schemes I used to 
participate in years ago? The scheme I'm looking at uses one plus ones on 
made up ground but specifies weed free spots for just 2 years. I foresee 
engulfing by weeds in year 4.
