Fungi on oak

Moving on from subs, here's a change of subject:

I looked at a big oak in someone's garden the other day which had Meripilus popping up all over the place, both around the trunk but also coming up in the lawn some way away. The same tree also had Fomes brackets at the base. The crown looks pretty awful and I don't think there's much doubt about the prognosis - but neither species of fungus is commonly associated with oak (although I've been finding more Merip. than Grifola on oak over the last couple of years) -

So I wondered if anyone has any insight into how these species of fungus interact with oak as compared with their more usual UK hosts.
