Philip,

Apparently, if the US Arboretum people are to be believed, all that was
holding it up was a steel pole and some cables, one of which had pulled
through the shell of the hollowed-out tree. There are photos on-line.
Please examine the evidence and tell me/us just how you would have arrived
at a different conclusion. On the basis of this testimony and evidence, I
believe, in the absence of contrary and specific evidence, that, as the
Arboretum staff were quoted as saying, that had it not been such an
historically important tree, that it would have been removed for good cause
years ago. Just what specific measures would you recommend to preserve the
tree?

What really counts is whether or not the tree needed to come down. Is
anyone suggesting that a tree in that condition should not be removed?

To be fair, a quick search provides the following information from a
number of different news agencies.
"At the recommendation of specialists from the National Arboretum,
first lady Melania Trump called for a large portion of the tree to be
removed this week."
The documents read in part:

*"The overall architecture and structure of the tree is greatly
compromised and the tree is completely dependent on the artificial
support. Without the extensive cabling system, the tree would have
fallen years ago. Presently, and very concerning, the cabling system
is failing on the east trunk, as a cable has pulled through the very
thin layer of wood that remains. It is difficult to predict when and
how many more will fail."*

*The National Arboretum said in the documents obtained by CNN that if
it were not for the particular history of the tree, it would have been
cleared several years ago. "All measures have been used to save it to
this point in time...While we cannot comment on the need to preserve
the tree as long as it stands, we believe eventually, the tree will
fail," the report said. *
