There is sensible advice about fires in woods in FC publications probably
about social aspects of forestry, but I can't say precisely where. Worth
finding though, in case your planner is difficult. I expect Jim would splash
a bit of red diesel into an old tyre to start a fire, then same again a
little further along. This was in the days before pollution of course.

In "the old days" with woodland felling for hardwood pulp we had any number
of fires and other than not burning branch overhang (by suitable placement) I
doubt that a campfire would have any significance. 13 hectares? On the
assumption that there would only be a few fire sites, which unless they are
going to smelt iron ore will be very small, and that wildlife is generally
not suicidal I doubt that there would be any impact.
I assume it is broadleaf woodland so no risk of Rhizina undulata.
I would prescribe a condition requiring common sense!

I am dealing with a planning application for limited camping in a mature wood
of 13 hectares.

Part of use will be small fires under or close to tree canopies by campers
for cooking and warmth at night (not bonfires)

Has anyone any experience on restrictions imposed on such fires by planners?

On the face of it harmless but smoke could affect birds and bats.
