One of the points to come out of Jim's post is that if the grille is cast
iron, a careful blow with a big-enough hammer might break it, rather than
having to bring an electric grinder to the situation to cut it.

The photos were taken at the time and about 2 years afterwards, but in those
days (mid 90s) I didn't really have much of an index system.
As I recall the trees were of much the same size as yours and Norway maple,
but the care with which one extracts the metalwork is imperative. The trick
is to smash off the outer part of the grille and try and crack the ring
against the tree at the less deeply embedded (or nor embedded) parts, and
then gently wiggle (hope this is not too technical for you) each part from
the tree. (I do remember that with one of them, one half came away in one
piece). I also recall that some cambium damage was inevitable, but frankly,
if just in a few localised positions would still be less disruptive than
grafts.

Thank Jim, what would your photos show other than a dark recess where the
cast girdle is located.
If they are of the recovered tree then brilliant. Do you recall the species
and girth (I guess this is universal around the 35-45cm diameter)?

The chances are that the grille is cast iron. If so it is brittle and can be
broken with a hammer (slip something underneath the impact points so that
there is no leverage damage to the tree). Clearly the cambium is still
functional so if done with care and the wound protected with hessian, the
tree will survive and the wound will recover. I have done this many moons ago
on 3 trees but I haven't got time to plunge into archives for photographs.
