You had to use this tool to make two holes with the Arborsonic Decay
Detector, see page 170 of "Principles of Tree Hazard Assessment and
Management".

You should be able to find the tool on a shop selling wood working tools,
maybe as it's a hole punch.

Ah! He had a hammer that took a short increment core for sale some years ago
- that may be what it was - get in touch with him/his organisation - they may
have one left you can buy. He/they are very amenable to queries etc.
Or you could buy a hollow punch as used for making holes in eg leather atb

Hi Rupert,

Mattheck's book 'The Body Language of Trees - Encyclopedia of VTA' P168-176
about grafting.

Mattheck suggests a punch test right on the graft line, to remove a small
core (16mm diam.) in order to check the orientation of the wood grain and
also to see if there is included bark (P172).

Regards - Elton

Which textbook; or give us a picture....
Rupert
PS there was a device used decades ago, developed by a UK Tree
bod/lecturer/consultant - can not remember..
It involved driving a graduated rod with a slightly larger diameter proximal
end, into a previously drilled/increment cored hole in the tree, using blows
from an engineer's punch - a very clever tool, see attached image. One
counted the number of clicks made per cm of wood, and it indicated how dense
or otherwise the wood was - has Mattheck nicked/adapted this idea?

Morning all,
This looks pretty straightforward in a textbook but I am wondering how
effective it is in practice, anyone out there tried it, if so is it effective
and any recommendations for a decent 16mm punch?

Thanks - Elton
