from experience I’ve mostly seen this as a localised decay at the base of
stressed mature trees with fruiting bodies appearing to face nearby
trackways, footways (compacted soils) old excavations and roads.
Some vascular diseases such as Ceratocystis can travel to new hosts via
grafts infecting relatively healthy trees.
With highways containing vulnerable same species trees in close proximity
trenching between might help to arrest the spread of a migrating pathogen.

(only cos I can't remember how to spell Kret....)

How does this fungus spread to a new host? In other words, if I see one
lime with the fruiting bodies should I expect to see it in neighbours as a
consequence of root contact for example?

Kind regards,

Jonathan
