I guess the answer to Jon’s question is ‘it might but it might not’, not very
helpful but true!!

Hi Jonathan,
I'd have said it enters through root damage - which can include compaction

it on adjacent trees both with damage associated.

Schwarze Engels & Mattheck reckon that it invades via injuries to
bark/sapwood/roots, but mentions a study by Barry Grieg, 1989, Arb Journal
vol 13, 1-6 of it spreading in a lime avenue; and a suggestion in Sinclair,
Lyon, & Johnson 1987, 'Diseases of trees and Shrubs ' that it can spread in
the soil in Mycelial form and infect adjacent trees. TR Peace says it
affects roots killed by adverse soil conditions; and comments that it is
often associated with other fungi - which I have not noticed myself, unlike
Meripilus, which I've seen associated with Ganoderma.

I remember the spelling by thinking of a hybrid of two eastern European
names - Kretz, and then add schmaria - it always looks like there are too
many sh sounds in it...

(only cos I can't remember how to spell Kret....)

How does this fungus spread to a new host? In other words, if I see one
lime with the fruiting bodies should I expect to see it in neighbours as a
consequence of root contact for example?

Kind regards,

Jonathan
