Julian - no need to measure, estimates would suffice. Or if you if I can
see them on street view?

Cheers

John, there are 3 in my street, I know the exact year of planting (1980),
open grown on amenity spaces but variable soil and drainage. Some pruned.

go out and measure them.

Thanks all (my Mitchell says 2.5m shoot growth in a year!).

I'm really looking for some figures for height and girth of open grown
trees. I know it's pretty quick...I'd just like to narrow it down for a
tree I'm looking at.

Google not really helping me yet.

Ah! That might make more sense!
Anyway, all of these figures are to be taken with a pinch of slat,
being
so dependant on local conditions
The Tree Register records one in Llandeilo of 32.5metres as of 1982
www.monumentaltrees.com has one in Lourdes at 43 metres! (Almost
miraculous...)

Jerry,
I think the 2.5cm refers to diameter growth, I've seen quite a few
over
25m tall, so think Mitchell is closer to the mark.

There's a range of opinions:
John White (Cassels) says 5m in 10 years, 10m in 20 and 25m ultimate
height.
Alan Mitchell (Collins pocket guide) says 10m, 15m & 32m over the
same
times

www.britishhardwood.co.uk says
"The Red Oak is a very fast-growing tree (up to 2.5cm per year)*:
approximate stages of growth, assuming sited in suitable conditions
for
this species; After 10 years: 10m x 6m, After 20 years: 15m x 9m"

( * I presume they mean up to 2.5 Metres per year... )

Chew Valley Trees say "Red oak is a fast growing Oak from the East of
North America. It is one of the fastest growing Oaks, shoots growing
up to
2m (6ft) a year in good conditions. It can reach 25m (80ft) in 150
years."
