Sorry only just seen this. 

I used to visually stress grade timber in a sawmill. There’s different 
criteria for soft and hardwood. I was trained and assessed by TRADA I think 
they’re still the organisation that manages timber grading etc and can 
probably put you in touch with someone.

There are a few others, depends on the structure being tested, bridge, 
roof,  whether you need aging, or decay, infestations etc...

There are specialist heritage surveyors who do this, and I bumped into one

timber beams in an existing historic building. We don't. 
Has anyone on UKTC come across a firm that carries out this work?
