I think there was a recent item on the BBC website about an FSC project where
they are looking at being able to identify where any wood sample comes from
in the world down to 10km squares. Apparently the relative levels of isotopes
of nitrogen, oxygen, etc vary from place to place such that they provide a
'fingerprint' of location. This would help in them verifying their claim that
some 30% of timber comes from illegal sources, and help them to combat that.
I don't know how sound the science is, and there's a long way to go in
mapping, but it's a creditable and worthy aim.

Regards,

Alistair McGregor

The reason I was looking at FSC was that they are trying to regulate the
trade in timber, something which needs doing. How effective or relevant they
are I have no idea. I might try and talk to someone there.

I hadn't realised they were a charity Tahir. I presumed they were self
financing. I'd have thought there were better places to send your
money, although I've no criticism of them. from a quick search
Wikipedia has equal amounts of support and criticism about them.

We're looking t adding an environmental charity to the charities we
support (currently MSF and OnSide Youth Zones), is FSC a good idea?
Global timber trade needs policing but are they effective, are they
pursuing sensible policies?

Any views appreciated

Tahir
