Leave it alone.
1) dead wood on oak lasts for decades
2) that's not a motorway (=US freeway); it's a quiet country road
3) it'll be supporting a host of saproxylic organisms

Thanks, Jerry. Beautiful area. I wouldn't argue with leaving snags for
wildlife, but given the apparent asymmetry with the bulk of the
structure on the side facing the motorway, how would the honourable
members of this list approach its management?

I hope this trick works:

Where, exactly, is it located?
Moccas Park, one of the largest and most diverse examples of wood
pasture remaining in Britain with numerous ancient trees (alive and
as standing dead wood) and an enormous range of associated flora and
fauna, including many rare species dependent on dead wood.
Any photos?

Update on the request:

Tom (previously of Natural England ) sent me the query about boring
a large dead Oak.

I forwarded on the forum's many useful suggestions and established
what the reasoning was for wanting to drill the tree.

The tree concerned is at Moccas Park, Herefordshire, and has
significant history with the Wool Hope Naturalists Field Club
(which is still in existence at Moccas)

The tree is now dead (standing) and Tom is hoping to establish an
accurate
age . He has already tried the White Method but is not sure on the
result
which puts germination as 1600.

It turns out that Neville Fay is involved with the site so I
suggested
he
contacted Mr Fay who might have a reasonable idea of where to go
with
it !
For anyone interested he sent this link (albeit in a shorter format
,
but
I'm still working on my lack of tech skills)

Hi Phillip,
Yes but I think only for service/replacement bits etc; Michael
White's
son
Danile now runs, and their main work is in other fields. I don’t
think
you
can buy a DMP nowadays, but there may be some around still in use.
