A client (former life) once bought a corner of an arable field that dog-legged in to his garden. In doing so he relieved an ash (c.dbh 40cms) on his former boundary from having its rooting area ploughed annually. Some seven years later he got me to fell said ash tree because it interfered with his powered para-glider take-off area! Looking at the cross section of the trunk, it was striking how a marked increase in ring width exactly coincided with the period since the rooting area was no longer ploughed.

Hi Bill, I'm not trying to argue anything. One of my clients has a query
about a tree report that has prompted this query.

How would you argue that one? "Oh the tree's used to root damage cos it's
had roots ploughed off regularly...." I think that's misinterpreting what
the guidance is trying to achieve Mike.

Has anyone ever come across instances of reducing a tree's root protection
area because of ploughing activity? If so, have they been justified, or can
it be justified?
