Hi Graham,
I've used calipers for years on smaller trees - generally up to 60 cm - you
have to take 2 measurements and average if the trunk is not circular. There
was an FC piece a year or two ago comparing the accuracy of tape,
calipers, and a 'biltmore stick' which came out well in favour of the stick,
so I looked up the calcs on line and made one. It has been very very useful,
not only for awkward trees on banks, but also because you can ignore ivy with
it. Being an American invention - see
http://www.tree-tech.com/reports/biltmore_stick.xhtml and
https://www.thoughtco.com/making-your-own-personal-cruiser-stick-1343059
theirs are calibrated in inches.... so I made my own in metric dbh scale, in
cm.
I attach a spreadsheet giving the calculations for the spacing on the stick
for a metric one. I leave a section as a handle, then the 0 mark, and then
mark the edge up to the length of my outstretched arm (so I can use the stick
for estimating heights).
I've found it to be very useful. Contact me off-forum if you need any other
details
All the best

Rupert

Subject: Diameter callipers

Dear all

having spent another brambly afternoon on a wet Devon bank failing to
retrieve the loose end of a diameter tape, I’m wondering if there’s an easier
way. Has anyone out there tried using forestry callipers to measure dbh? If
so has anyone got any suggestions as to a useful make? I realise it’s not as
accurate as a diameter tape, but times and places...

Thanks
