Dean & Ian,
Thanks for the responses. Coprinellus spp. are said to be late-stage 
saprophytes preferring sapwood, which doesn't seem to fit well with the 
context - tree living, with the possibility that the fungus is associated 
with a defect internal to the pronounced flute in the trunk. Are they found 
in such a situation?

Looks like this is the one. Just check frequency and season of occurrence.

Would anyone care to venture an ID for this fungus? I understand it was 
observed in late June or early July, and the host is believed to be Norway 
maple.
