Going back to the root plate discussion earlier I have seen spruces on go over with relatively small root plate diameters but pulling long roots out of the ground. That's been on wet peaty soils in the Atlantic north west of these islands.  Those roots been a few metres long 50 - 100mm diameter and with no branches as if they had developed in response to tensile loads.
