Yes 5 litres is no where near enough and would just evaporate on a summers
day.
What Ben is suggesting is likely ok but you need to take soil type and
weather into consideration.

We have got these fancy irrigation tubes that wrap around the root zone, but
not convinced.

Going back to a drought year 1976 and when I was involved with a lot of
planting. What we did and it worked was to put a metal tube on end of hose
and
either make a hole or just push it down into the root zone. Very unscientific
and no idea how much water we gave each tree, probably based on leaf out.
That year I remember we lost about 5% of planted trees.

So recently I read a specification produced by a large and well-respected
landscape architecture firm that recommended watering semi-mature trees with
'5 litres of water as and when required'. I set them straight but it made me
realise that there isn't much clear guidance out there.

I'm now putting together my own guide and have come up with the attached
table. I would be interested to hear what others think about what I'm
suggesting. Any comments would be welcome, on or off forum.

Also, I'd be very grateful if anyone was willing to share their irrigation
specifications with me so that I can hopefully produce a practical guide.

Thanks in advance,

Ben
