Water to field capacity. But then again - how do you specify what this is
to the waterer?

Hi Ben,
Watering is a bit "finger-in-the-wind" and 8545 doesn't really help in the
way which you have started the ball rolling. It depends upon soil type and
whether drainage aids/equipment had been incorporated at the time of
planting.
Section 11.3 in 8545 suggests testing, but more realistically does provide
a suggested benchmark for what is "dry" weather in terms of temperature
and time elapsed. Annex G. G2 and Table G1 go into more detail, but who in
all honesty is going to define the soil types in the manner described? -
particularly as the first year's growth is likely to be in the planting
pit, which may or may not have used the site's soil, but almost certainly
will be at a different bulk density.
In a landscape setting where there are ground staff around watering can be
carried out appropriately. In a development site . . . ? or highway
planting . . . ?
As with all BSIs where there are scant empirical yardsticks, the first
paragraph in the Foreword under the heading 'Use of this document' applies.
You have a job on, and thank you for your initiative.
Best,
Jim

So recently I read a specification produced by a large and well-respected
landscape architecture firm that recommended watering semi-mature trees
with '5 litres of water as and when required'. I set them straight but it
made me realise that there isn't much clear guidance out there.

I'm now putting together my own guide and have come up with the attached
table. I would be interested to hear what others think about what I'm
suggesting. Any comments would be welcome, on or off forum.

Also, I'd be very grateful if anyone was willing to share their irrigation
specifications with me so that I can hopefully produce a practical guide.

Thanks in advance,

Ben
