More like the arms trade does not change Simon.

There was a whole industry in Europe collecting bow staves from the
hinterland and transporting them down rivers to ports where they could be
used to pay the import duties. They then send them across the channel to
England with the wine, brandy etc.

We shape they up with a draw knife - put a sting on them and take them
back to Europe to kill the locals!

Exocet missile anybody?

I've found yew stems like that growing out of the top of a very long
neglected yew hedge, effectively pollard stems.

In Tudor times there was a law that every barrel of wine imported had to
be accompanied by a number of bow staves. I don't know numbers but I
seem
to recall Henry's annual wine bill being £3,000 at the time which would
be
something colossal in current figures. The arms race is nothing new
