In principle it is possible to span significant roots and frankly so what if 
fibrous roots in the immediate vicinity of the width of the gabion wall are 
damaged or rendered dysfunctional?  The vascular function of woody roots to 
the root system beyond will be unaffected.
However, without knowing any details of the site (not least, what is the 
gabion wall's function) one cannot pronounce with any surety.
