They do have some massive goats in Cheshire....:-)

They are clearly trying to look after the tree with the mulch and its looking 
to me to be a beech. My best guess is its to prevent squirrels, but not sure 
if stockings would work? I don't have a lot of experience here, but perhaps 
their little claws might get entangled?

Interesting one....

A colleague has forwarded the attached image of an oak in Grosvenor Estate at 
Eaton in Cheshire. 

 

They're curious as to why the trunk has been dressed with a stocking. So am 
I. 

 

An ideas?
