Bianca, if the trees in Kruger are like those of the Okavango Delta the
Mopanis are topped on a regular basis by elephants, not sure anything will
stop them.

As for the Cheshire tree perhaps horses (maybe giraffes?). In the New
Forest I have seen trees stripped of bark by the wandering horse.

Along that line of thought involving goats, if this were Kruger National
Park or other dryland forest areas I have knowledge of, all kinds of
inventive solutions have been tried to try and stop elephants bark
stripping or generally interfering with trees particularly in drought years
(see photo). I have also seen similar protective wrappings in some parts
of the Pindus mountains in Northern Greece used as a deterrent to climbing
bears.

A very sensible suggestion Andy.

For fear of receiving theories that the estate are 'protecting it from
pterodactyls' or 'just want the tree to look sexy' I've done just that.

I'll keep you posted as and when I get a response.
