Hilliers Manual of Trees and Shrubs has a good section at the end about
species suitable for various locations.

Not sure if this will help but the winner of this years Gardeners World best
garden award went to a coastal garden.

Designed and built from scratch on a steep slope. All the methods, species,
hard and soft landscaping materials etc., are set out in the Autumn magazine.
Failing that I'm sure it can be accessed online somewhere.
