Hi Rupert - don't see why not the FC Practice Guide suggests that dispersal
can occur over fairly large distances by wind, on animal hair, on the
clothing of volunteer workers (not sure why the volunteers have been singled
out) and in mud on vehicle tyres. Water dispersal seems a logical
possibility. I suppose the evidence would be prolific growth of new plants on
the river bank (or, alternatively, lack of this evidence). However the guide
also states that suitable substrate is fairly essential to successful
germination and it seems that a consistently moist environment is required
(old tree stumps / moss / woodland soil). This may exist on some river banks
but perhaps not generally.
Pictures like this suggest that it is at least a possibility

Hi All,
A query re Rhodo ponticum - as it says in the subject line. Anyone any ideas
- scenario, river bank - upland, fast-flowing in winter; big variation in
levels winter-summer, flowing off through/off Dartmoor - acid sandy clay
granite-derived soils - what is the likelihood of seeds from the ponticum
spreading downstream - in the way eg hemlock, hogweeds, or Himalayan Balsam
do? Any observatins most useful
Atb
Rupert
