My wife is a (non-arb) consultant, and I always proofread her reports for
clarity, typos, sense etc. Its quite easy for an incorrect name or date to
slip through, and I wouldn't fancy trying to explain that in court. Coming
at a document afresh I can often pick up ambiguities which are not intended.

Mind you, my favourite was when she was experimenting with dictation software
where the word "f**k" appeared in the middle of a sentence. I can only
suppose she spilt her tea and it slipped out sotto voce, only to be picked up
the by wonders for software!

A lesson to be learnt, there.

I've had the marvellous job of doing a tree report for a professional proof
reader.

I didn't know her profession at the time, but when I submitted the tree
report, boy I found out about it!

David Evans has been talking about 'invisible' Gorillas in plain sight and I
would certainly echo that idea! It is amazing how you can read past glaring
mistakes in your own work because it has become so familiar.

Anyway, it's not just me, it was pointed out to me that table 1 of BS5837,
which I reproduced, misspells 'category' in its title.

I've been told that becoming an entirely random other person, a 10 year old
child, a 12th century monk, a 10th century viking or an 18th century botanist
when proofing your work breaks through the monotony of proofing and ensures
what is written is clear, easy to understand, defensible and not full of
jargon.

Dave-Bloodaxe the proofreader, here I come!

Cheers

Dave
