Wayne - the British 'native' black poplar is the sub-species Populus nigra ssp. betulifolia - quite distinct different from American cottonwoods, such as P deltoides, with which it was crossed back in the 19th century giving rise to the host of hybrid black poplars, which now vastly outnumber the native tree. The native tree is considered to be something of a rarity in the UK, although it is now being propagated quite widely. Dr. Fiona Cooper has written a very informative book on the tree [ISBN 1-905119-05-4]

I am just beyond the southern native (but not necessarily historic) range

the sea. A few have been reported in the mountains of Baja California,
Mexico.

Does anyone have any experience of DNA testing to confirm the presence of
native black poplars?

Specifically what samples were required and where the testing was
completed?

Thanks in advance
