Thank you, Andrea. I didn't know that Araucaria were grafted. At what stage
of growth are they grafted; at what diameter and distance above the root
union? Do you suspect that this was a case of a large tree being grafted
(as in topworking avocados)?

The link did not take me to the paper. As I don't know this site, I don't
want to sign up; I can't even get to an abstract.

abnormalities that may indicate defects within the tree, or site
conditions
that may contribute to the likelihood of failure.  It is pretty clear
from
the failure mode that there is decay at the base of the trunk/root
crown
