Wayne, what I have noticed (I think) is that you guys on the other side of 
the pond don't seem to have such a hang up about trees in close proximity to 
dwellings.  In this country, I think it would be quite rare for a tree of 
that size to survive so close to a house - we, esp insurers/subsidence 
companies, seem to be obsessed with this and I get many applications to 
remove trees simply based on proximity.  Shame to see the old girl go, but it 
must have been fun whilst it lasted.
