Phillip has it right. Ecoplugs are the answer, and you can get them into
buttress roots and any others if you can find them near the surface (if you
are licensed to use pesticides).

The rest of you  STOP IT NOW...!

Bandying around some dubious and/or unsafe, unhealthy and inefficient
practices that may have been carried out in the past is not especially
responsible in my view.  Remember, this forum is accessible to all and I'd
hate to think that some short-cut DIY nut would pick up on any of this.
